Kingston, Canada – July 8, 2026.
As part of the “Halaqah Across America and Canada with Madam Ani” series, approximately 100 participants spanning various professions and age groups, from youth to working-age adults attended a session on Islamic finance and education held at the Islamic Society of Kingston, Canada, on July 8, 2026. The event served as a forum for community connection and shared learning, aiming to strengthen public understanding of Islamic finance, Islamic education, and social concern within the Muslim community.
The session featured Murniati Mukhlisin, a Professor at Tazkia University and Founder of Sakinah Finance, accompanied by Sitti Sahro Locke, Aisha Locke from Dompet Dhuafa USA, Thomas Locke from Comfasion, and Nina Marliani from Sakinah Finance. Opening remarks were delivered by Toseef Azid, a Professor at the University of Management & Technology and Director of the Khurshid Ahmad Institute of Islamic Economics and Finance, in Lahore, Pakistan. Toseef is an esteemed educator who has taught many students in the UK and Saudi Arabia and he is currently visiting Canada.

“Strengthening community education hand-in-hand with improving financial literacy, fostering social concern, and building Islamic character forms a vital foundation for institutional development, a lesson we can learn from Professor Murniati on how she developed Tazkia University and Sakinah Finance,” Toseef stated in his remarks.

During the main session, Madam Ani shared her experiences regarding the establishment of Tazkia University as part of an effort to build high-quality, impactful Islamic education. “The initial phase requires noble intention and commitment, a strong team, and a measurable quality management system—outlined in short-, medium-, and long-term blueprints—to ensure development is effectively monitored,” she said.

Madam Ani then introduced Sakinah Finance, an initiative focused on Islamic financial education and literacy, strengthening family economies, and empowering the community based on Islamic values. Additionally, she briefly outlined the importance of understanding ZISWAF as components of responsible, purposeful wealth management that yields social benefits—as demonstrated by the work of Dompet Dhuafa in Indonesia and abroad. This message serves as a reminder that financial management in Islam is not merely an economic matter but also a component of moral responsibility and concern for others.

On the same occasion, Sitti Sahro Locke from Dompet Dhuafa USA briefly outlined her organization’s efforts to assist disaster-affected communities across various regions of Indonesia, while also encouraging the public to continue participating in ZISWAF to support the greater good of the community. This session aims to foster greater public awareness regarding the importance of Islamic financial literacy, Islamic education, and the spirit of sharing as foundations for building a community that is empowered, caring, and sustainable.
